If you aren't completely on board with talking to a speaker, Google Home has an app for both Android and iOS that allows you to configure and control your Google Home speakers remotely. Without being connected to the internet, Google Home can't do a whole lot. You can use it as a wireless speaker for local media, but most of the useful functionality relies on an internet connection. While Google Home is a decent enough speaker, you can find better wireless speakers for less money if you don't plan on connecting to the internet.

You can also enjoy music from Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio and other popular music services . Google Home Hub’s full-range speaker means crisp, clear sound every time. Setting up and pairing smart home tech has always been a little limiting. If you find yourself using devices from different ecosystems, there is a good chance that the thing you thought would make things easier actually makes it more difficult.

What works for the Google Pixel 6a

Supporting this new standard means products are compatible with more homes and are much easier to use, which becomes a win-win for everyone. This breaks the barrier for a lot of people, as they don’t need to stick with just one standard like Google Home or HomeKit. Even though the standard has been officially alive for a limited time, companies like Google are already on top of supporting it.

Beyond that, even more have announced upcoming support for the Matter standard. Of course, this is just the first step, as no smart home products outside of Eve’s lineups are using Matter as of yet. My favorite feature of the Nest Hub is now available on third party Google Assistant displays as well. The panel shows a status of your home including how many lights are on and the current temperature. You'll see shortcut buttons for common tasks that change based on which devices you have synced to your Google Assistant. You still have to use the Nest appto set up a Nest thermostat or camera. Nest speakers and smart displays, however, require you to use the Google Home app.

However, some granularity on what Google collects and better transparency about which features rely on data collection would be much appreciated. If you want extra features like a camera and full Nest support, you might want to consider the Google Nest Hub Max. And it’s not a bad deal, especially considering you’re getting a premium-looking phone at just Rs 30,000. The Google Pixel 6a has been in the Indian market for a little over four months now. Oddly, X10 and UPB devices are not compatible and require a controller that supports both protocols to make them work together. With this, you have all the convenience of having comprehensive information on Google in an instant. Since it is compatible with numerous apps and services, it can order a pizza for you, book an Uber ride, and provide you with the latest news from CNN. Google Home Hub’s Ambient EQ automatically adjusts your screen’s brightness so that this smart assistant blends in your home’s atmosphere.

It feels sturdily made and while the screen could break if something heavy came in contact with it, we felt more than safe with it sitting on our kitchen shelves and dining room table. Because there are a lot of similarities, the Google Home Hub is a device we almost feel like we’ve used before. For example, it has the auto-updating Google Photos gallery and Home View, which shows your entire smart home at a glance and adds Google's touch to things. To me, the Google Home Hub only really makes sense in the kitchen, and that’s where mine ended up.

You’ll find that devices can work in some respects but often don’t play nicely with each other. Eve, for example, has always only supported HomeKit, meaning customers with Android phones are unable to use or control those devices. Still, its built-in speakers and microphones do the job, and its soft fabric design should blend naturally into most rooms. Its 7-inch frame is a natural fit on a bedside table or bathroom counter, and while it lacks a built-in camera, that may be a good thing for those who want an added sense of privacy.

Control your connected home

Out of the entire library of products, though, what works best with Google Home Hub are the Nest family of products including its smart thermostat, smart security camera and video doorbell system. Those companies and products are just the tip of the iceberg of what’s supported with more makes and models being added to the platform all the time. The light sensor enables the device to drop its brightness level when it detects a dark room. A growing number of home automation systems don't require a hub and can simply be controlled directly using a mobile app.

Right, so before you start your smart home odyssey, you’ll need to setup your new device. For Google Home Hub, that will require downloading - or, for some of you, re-installing - the Google Home app. Once that’s locked and loaded on your mobile device of choice, you can simply tap the plus icon under the Home heading, and the app will search for any nearby Made by Google device. After a short pairing process you’ll need to select which room the Hub is located in as well as add any new smart devices you might have purchased alongside the Home Hub. This leads to perhaps the biggest new feature with the Google Home Hub — YouTube and casting.
